SHAVERS - FAQ

Who can participate and how?
Anyone who is interested can participate, and there are a number of ways to do it. You can register online to shave off your locks (a cut of 10 inches or more counts as a shave) and raise money to support young adults dealing with cancer. If shaving is a little too extreme for you, you can raise/donate money in support of a shaver, a team, or Young Adult Cancer Canada in general.

How do I register?
We strongly encourage online registration. This way, you can collect and track your online donations! If you cannot register online, you may register the day of the event.

You may register as an individual or as part of a team.  The registration fee is $25 for students and $40 for adults. This can be paid in cash or raised in pledges ($25/$40 or more in pledges WAIVES your registration fee!).

Rather not shave in public? Have a Solo Shave! Anyone who would like to visit their own stylist, and collect pledges from family and friends for their own private event, can still register and help the cause. If registering online, choose Solo when selecting your location, and simply let us know when and where you will be shaving so we can get you your toque.

Remember to request and wear an I’m Shaving for the Brave! badge to help your promotion and fundraising efforts!  All shavers also receive a yellow Shave for the Brave toque to cover their smooth head!

Those wishing to organize a Shave at their school or office should visit the Head Hunters section of this website.

What is the difference between a school shaver, a community shaver, and a solo shaver?
School shavers are students who register to shave at their school Shave event. School Shaves will be held starting February 1st and leading up to the various community shaves.

Community shavers are members of the general public who register to shave at a community event (i.e. St. John’s - Avalon Mall, Corner Brook - Marble Mountain).  Check our News section of the site regularly to get updates on schools, businesses, and communities holding their own Shaves, or visit the Locations section of this site for a complete list.

Anyone who would like to visit their own stylist, and collect pledges from family and friends for their own private event, can still register and help the cause as a Solo Shaver. If registering online, choose Solo when selecting your location, and simply let us know when and where you will be shaving so we can get you your toque.

How bald do I have to go?
Your Shave will be done by professional hairstylists using clippers with no guard. If you want to break out the shaving cream and razor afterward, go for it!

A cut of 10 inches or more counts as a shave, so if you have long hair, you can participate and keep some of your hair, too!  Hair must be clean and braided.  Minimal processing is accepted.  Donations of hair are sent to be made into wigs for children with cancer.

Where does the money go?
All funds raised during the Shave for the Brave go directly toward supporting our programs for young adult cancer patients and survivors including: the YACC Online Community, Retreat Yourself, Survivor Conference, and We Get It - A Survivor Video.  Donations allow us to offer these programs at no cost to the young adults that truly need them.
For more information on Young Adult Cancer Canada and our finances, check out our Annual Report.

How do I raise money?
We strongly encourage online registration. Once you have done this, you can collect and track your donations online!  You will be able to send emails to friends, family, and co-workers for support.

You may also download a pledge sheet. This form is for OFFLINE donations only - please do not record your ONLINE donations here. Make as many copies as you need. (Remember to bring all of your physical pledges along with your fully completed pledge sheet(s) on the day of the event!)

Finally, you call tell your donors that they may call us at 1-877-571-7325 to give by VISA or Mastercard, or they may mail a cheque to: Shave for the Brave, YACC, Box 8171, St. John’s, NL, A1B 3M9.

Who are cheques made payable to?
All cheques are to be made payable to Young Adult Cancer Canada.

How do I find out who donated on my behalf online?
If you register online, you will receive an automatic email when someone donates on your behalf. This way, you will get a chance to thank anyone who donated to you, and bug anyone who you want to donate!

Where do I drop off donations I have received?
If you are a school or office shaver, please bring your donations to your school or business on the day of your shave where your Head Hunter (shave organizer) will collect them before you go under the clippers.  Community shavers should bring their donations on the day of the community event.  Others can drop their pledges off at our office during office hours. Just give us a call first at 1-877-571-7325.

When and where do I get my toque?
You get your official yellow Shave for the Brave toque immediately after you shave.  If you are a Solo Shaver, let us know when and where you will be shaving so we can get a toque to you.
